Tried to install LabTick, but it said "no backlit keyboard." So in playing around, I pressed and held Shift-Alt-Command and then (still while holding) the power button. SMC and PRAM resets didn't help. The solution to this is simple enough: adjust the Mac so that the source of bright lighting is no longer shining on the display and near the front-facing camera. It's dark outside and I'm sitting in a fairly dimly lit room now and the keyboard is lit and staying lit, so I don't know what was going on.

I went into system prefs and put a check mark in the box to adjust the keyboard lighting in low light.
