I haven't had this issue before. Covering the sensor will enable the backlit keys to turn on, usually instantly, and you can then adjust the backlight as usual with the F5 and F6 keys. If I put a light (a lamp) at the sensor I get the correct image above as well… can there be a small cable loose or something?

When it senses the ambient light is low, the backlit keyboard turns on, and there are keys that let me control its brightness. I just needed that. Also, this is odd: Yesterday when I first noticed the problem, I was under keyboard in the preferences and there is an option that you can check that says "Automatically..." Now You can find it by running your hand across the computer in full light until the keys light up.
