My understanding is that this "switch" is there to tell the fan to kick on based on rising temps in the coolant. its either that or the fan module on the fan coupling. Bmw E46 Electric Fan Not Working could be the fan motor. I have not pulled them all to check yet, but that exercise might be next. I decided to go against taking the coolant plug out from the passengers side exhaust manifold area.
I've refilled/bled the coolant and so far the cooling system appears to run ok,with the exception of the fan.
