Try this: Take an sample of your data (5 gigs) and try to compress it with zip. I'll have to do some more testing to see if it's because I am pulling data from our SAN via an iSCI connection, although I don't see it being an issue. Software compression can be useful if you are performing remote backups and have limited bandwidth between the host server and remote agent and want to try to reduce the backup window.
